Kansas City has a rich history of African American heritage, from educators, activists, entertainers, entrepreneurs, athletes, doctors, nurses, lawyers, engineers and many others who shaped the community. The City is poised to deepen its commitment to preserving and celebrating Black history through a $75,000 Underrepresented Communities Grant through the National Park Service to continue its work to document historic places associated with African American heritage.

The City's Planning and Development Department as the grant recipient will conduct the efforts to create a citywide African American mulitple property documentationform and identify three new sites to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
