Time to Renew?
Renew online by using the "My APA" link found at the top of every APA webpage.
If you are not logged in, you will be prompted to do so.
In the "Membership" section of your My APA page, click "My Invoice" or "Renew Online."
How to Pay
PAY BY PHONE
You may renew your membership by paying your dues over the phone using a credit card. Call 312-431-9100. Your payment will be processed within 1–2 business days.
PAY BY MAIL
Mail your printed digital invoice and payment to the address shown on the invoice. Your payment will be processed within 3-5 business days from the time the payment is received.
Membership AUTO-RENEWAL PROGRAM
You may pay for your membership and other APA services electronically through monthly or annual charges to your credit or debit card. Through APA's Auto-Renewal Program, you may qualify to pay your annual dues in up to a maximum of 10 equal installments.
You can sign up online during your membership renewal.

Special Membership Status
Retired Membership Status
You qualify as an APA Retired Member if you have been an active and continuous member for at least 10 years, are at least 65 years of age, and do not engage in any planning-related profession, business, or trade (excludes part-time non-planning or nonprofessional work). As an APA Retired member, you receive reduced APA, AICP, and chapter dues and a full exemption from the Certification Maintenance requirements.
Members who do not qualify for retired membership may be eligible for reduced dues as unemployed or in transition members. See below for details.
Life Membership Status
You qualify as an APA Life Member if you have been an active and continuous member for at least 25 years and are at least 65 years of age. As an APA Life member, you receive reduced APA, AICP, and chapter dues and have two CM exemption options:
- Option 1: You have the option to meet half the CM credits required (16 CM credits) including 1.0 credits each of ethics, law, equity, and sustainability and resilience.
OR
- Option 2: If you are a Life Member who meets the Retired Member criteria, then you qualify for a full exemption from CM requirements.
To request the Life Member exemption, please complete the Life Membership Form Application.
Members who do not qualify for retired membership may be eligible for reduced dues as unemployed or in transition members. See below for details.
Unemployed/In Transition Membership Status
APA offers special reduced rates for current members who are not working on a temporary or permanent basis, but who do not meet the requirements of Life or Retired membership status. Members may qualify for one year of reduced dues for every three years of continuous membership, up to a maximum of five years (for those who have been members for 15 years or longer). Members must request the unemployment rate annually.

Individual Memberships
Membership Basics
All APA Memberships belong to the individual member, not an organization, even when an organization pays a member's dues, and are not transferable.
Memberships are renewed annually. (The membership period can be found on your MyAPA homepage.) Membership is renewed when dues are paid in full unless actively enrolled in the auto-renew program's monthly/annual payments.
Dues are not tax-deductible as a charitable contribution. Dues may be considered a business expense, except for 38 percent of California chapter dues, which are allocated to chapter lobbying costs.
National and AICP Dues
National dues pay for basic APA membership. AICP dues cover your earned membership in the American Institute of Certified Planners. AICP members must be APA members. Both types of dues are based on current annual salary and other professional income to ensure that dues are fair to all members. Members may also elect not to disclose their income levels. APA and its members operate with integrity. Our salary-based dues structure depends on that integrity. Records are kept confidential.
If your annual salary or other professional income has changed, your dues may have also changed. You may update this in MyAPA, or during the online renewal process.
Retired/Life Members Dues
APA offers special reduced dues rates for retired and life members. Members must meet all requirements to qualify for these reduced dues and may request life or retired membership status. To request reduced dues, apply for Retired dues or Life members.
Unemployed/In Transition Dues
APA offers special reduced dues rates for current members who are not working on a temporary or permanent basis, but who do not meet the requirements of a life or retired member. Members may qualify for one year of reduced dues for every three years of continuous membership, up to a maximum of five years (for those who have been members for 15 years or longer). Members must request this reduced rate annually.
Chapter Dues
Chapter dues cover membership in one or more chapters. Membership in a primary chapter, based on your preferred mailing address, is required for members with U.S. mailing addresses. Members in U.S. territories or foreign military bases are exempted from this requirement. Additional chapter memberships are optional.

Division Dues
Membership in one or more special-interest divisions is optional. For dues rates, go to Member Dues. For details about APA's divisions, go to the Division's homepage. Add divisions to your membership renewal, or by contacting Customer Service.

Group Memberships
Group Planning Board Members
Eligible participants are members of planning boards and commissions and city councils, aldermen, mayors, and other elected officials. They may not earn their living in planning. Members of AICP are not eligible for planning board membership.
Planning board members receive all regular APA member benefits.

Faculty Memberships
Programs that are full members of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) are eligible to enroll their faculty as academic members in APA. APA academic members receive all regular membership benefits plus a subscription to the online edition of the Journal of the American Planning Association.
Participating schools must sign up all faculty members with a rank of assistant professor or higher who devote 50 percent or more of their time to the planning department. Schools may enroll any other tenured, tenure-tracked, or emeritus faculty who currently teach in or have retired from the planning department. Schools may not enroll lecturers, adjunct faculty, or teaching assistants.
Additional Information
This invoice covers memberships and fees for group memberships paid for by the organization. Any other products or subscriptions purchased by you will appear on a separate invoice.

Chapters are your local source for networking and professional development. Dues vary by chapter. Chapter-only members are not members of APA national, do not qualify for discounts offered to APA members, and may not identify themselves as APA members. Change your chapter or join a new chapter during your online renewal, or by contacting Customer Service.
