Great Places in America unveiled

APA announced the 2018 Great Places in America Tuesday as a part of Planners' Day on Capitol Hill, the final day of the Policy and Advocacy Conference and APA's biggest advocacy event of the year. The announcement, featuring remarks from APA President Cynthia Bowen, FAICP, and Congressman Bobby Scott (D-Va.), marked the first time the event occurred at the Capitol. Representatives from all 15 of this year's Great Places were present to celebrate and tell their legislators how planning strengthened their neighborhoods, streets, and public spaces.

National Community Planning Month begins October 1

Tuesday's announcement also kicked off our countdown to National Community Planning Month, when we recognize planning's achievements in the United States.
APA calls on planners nationwide to bolster our message that housing is a critical component of community infrastructure. Show and tell elected officials and citizen advocates how you are addressing community housing challenges through planning. Amplify our collective message by hosting a walking tour, meeting in-district with elected officials, and proclaiming October as Planning Month. Get started with ready-made tools in our Planning Month Resource Hub. Tell us how you are celebrating Planning Month in your community; we will share members' outreach stories all month long.

International Division releases Livable Communities survey results

As populations age and live much longer, planners worldwide are recognizing that this demographic shift demands a different approach to planning. In 2017, using funds from an APA Divisions Council research grant, the APA International Division and partners surveyed planners around the world about incorporating Livable Communities for All Ages principles. The survey garnered responses from planners in 33 countries. Read the final report for results, case studies, and more.
