- Clarkdale, Arizona, adopted sustainable development guidelines that promote practical and innovative ways to conserve resources and preserve the environment.
- In Michigan, Gov. Rick Snyder showed his support for planning by proclaiming October as Community Planning Month.
- Planners in the Twin Cities are joining forces with YEP! Youth Engagement Planning to teach fifth graders about planning and how students can shape their communities.

Foundation disaster recovery grants
The APA Foundation announced plans to distribute $78,000 in disaster recovery grants to communities in California, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Texas. Funds derive from generous donors who contributed to the Foundation disaster recovery appeal and from a Pisces Foundation grant. These Foundation grants will aid communities that were impacted in 2017 by natural disasters including hurricanes, floods, and wildfires.

Home Occupations, the latest addition to APA's Research KnowledgeBase for members, has background info, practical guidance, and examples of regulations that illustrate how communities use home occupation regulations to support small-business development and protect the residential character of established single-family neighborhoods.
